A discussion with our Full-Stack Engineer

Following the recent round of fundraising, we have been adding experienced engineers to the Nossa Team.

Here, ESG Integration Lead Ruby O'Connell catches up with our recent addition to the team, Rising Odegua.

You have extensive experience as a software engineer, what inspired you to use your skills at a start-up like Nossa Data?

I have worked at multiple start-ups and have been privileged to work in various roles from frontend development and backend development, to data science and machine learning. The start-up environment is fast-paced and one in which I can have a high-impact, which is basically what intrigues me.

In March 2022, I decided to make a big life decision by moving to the UK, and naturally, I wanted to join a new company. Coincidentally, one of the founders reached out to me for an opportunity to work in an exciting and important space called ESG. After speaking and interviewing with the team, I immediately knew it was the right start-up for me to do my next work.

You also mentor alongside your work at Nossa Data, what exactly do you do? What do you enjoy about it?

I have always been a community-oriented person. Over the years, across my career, I have been heavily involved in open source, community building, event organization, speaking engagements, and mentorship for beginners coming into the tech space. I really enjoy giving back to the community and working to make sure new people have all the right guidance as they join the technological revolution. This is evident in my various involvement with communities and programs like Google Developer Experts and Github Stars program of which I am a proud recipient. 

What challenges are you looking forward to overcoming in the ESG space?

The ESG space is exciting and new for me. The idea of providing the required tools and technology that companies, whether large or small, use to report their ESG data is a challenge I am excited about. I am looking forward to the intricacies of navigating various reporting framework challenges as well as creating software that consolidates ESG reporting. 

You have recently joined Nossa Data, how have you found adapting into a new team?

One word, “Amazing!” The Nossa Data team has been really welcoming and supportive, and in less than a week of joining the company, I already felt at home. They’ve made my first few months in the UK very exciting. Thanks to the Nossa Data team for all the place, activity and food recommendations!

Other than the weather, how has adjusting to the UK been?

The weather has not been too bad to be honest. Although, it sometimes gets too unpredictable. Besides that, the UK has been really great! I am definitely enjoying exploring London, trying new food, and new experiences. 

What are you looking forward to most in the next 6 months at Nossa Data?

A lot can happen in 6 months, but what I’m most looking forward to at Nossa Data, is to see myself heavily involved in major product decisions, influencing strategies and shipping major features.
